Layered to Perfection

It's probably cliché to say, but I have huge admiration for Jenna Lyons. The uber stylish creative director of J. Crew. Who disregards fashion rules. Pairs unlikely colors and patterns. Wears a man's shirt impeccably. A style icon, in her own right, whose fashion is approachable and yet, extremely dynamic. As if that weren't enough, she's single-handedly launched several trends, including a personal favorite -- unexpected layers. Throwing a trench over a denim jacket. A sharp white blouse under an embellished tee.

Several bloggers and street-chic fashionistas have been photographed in this same trend.

The perfect layered outfit, pairs varied proportions, with textures and pattern. A form fitting long tee, under a partially buttoned plaid shirt, finished with a soft, cropped turtleneck sweater -- allowing the individual undergarments to peek under. Leather pants matched with ankle booties and a wooden, chunk heel.

On a crisp, chilled day, complete the look with a denim vest and a wool, plaid trench. Finish the layers with an infinity scarf. Take this outfit from morning to evening, removing layers if necessary.

A well layered outfit has intention and personality. Make a bold statement while playing with unexpected textures and proportions. Have fun with fashion and don't take yourself too seriously!
